Not all whitening
is the same.
Over-the-counter whitening products are limited by regulation to low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Typically 0.1%, compared to the 25–40% used in a clinical setting. This fundamental difference in concentration is why home kits produce marginal results and why professional whitening produces a genuinely visible change in a single session.
Professional treatment also includes gum barrier protection and sensitivity management, reducing post-treatment discomfort that is common with unguided home use.

Extrinsic staining, responds well
Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and food-based staining on the enamel surface. This type of staining responds predictably and well to professional bleaching.
Age-related yellowing, responds well
Natural darkening of teeth over time as enamel thins and the underlying dentine becomes more visible. Whitening effectively addresses this change.
Tetracycline staining, limited response
Antibiotic staining absorbed into dentine during tooth development. Whitening has limited effect, veneers are typically the better solution for this type.
Crowns, veneers & fillings, no effect
Whitening does not alter the colour of existing restorations. If you have visible restorations, your specialist advises on sequencing. Whitening first, then matching restorations to the new shade.

High-concentration hydrogen peroxide gel applied to tooth surfaces. LED light activates the gel. Three 15–20 minute cycles completed. Gel refreshed between cycles.

Shade compared and recorded. Sensitivity-reducing fluoride treatment applied. Home maintenance instructions and optional custom whitening tray provided.

Will whitening cause sensitivity?
Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect of professional whitening, typically lasting 24–48 hours. The severity varies by individual and pre-existing enamel condition. A fluoride treatment applied at the end of the session reduces this significantly. Patients with existing sensitivity should inform their specialist beforehand so that the protocol can be adjusted.
Can I whiten if I have fillings or crowns?
You can whiten, but the bleaching agent does not affect existing restorations. If you have visible fillings or crowns in the smile zone, your specialist will advise on sequencing: typically whiten first, then replace visible restorations to match the new, lighter shade. This avoids a colour mismatch.
How long do results last?
Results typically last 12–18 months. Duration depends heavily on dietary habits, coffee, tea and red wine accelerate re-staining, and on whether home maintenance is used. Custom-fitted home whitening trays used periodically extend the result significantly.
Is professional whitening safe?
Yes, when performed in a clinical setting with proper gum barrier protection. The temporary sensitivity and minor gum irritation that can occur are transient and resolve without treatment. Professional whitening does not permanently damage enamel at the concentrations and exposure times used.
